A Pop Culture Ramble

Catching Fire OutfitsAs usual, a lot has been going on in the world of pop culture, which means I have a lot of opinions to share. Today I’ve decided to get some of these thoughts out briefly in blog form. I welcome you to share any of your opinions on the subjects I’m about to discuss in the comment section below! Here we go.

Today I finally got to see the Catching Fire movie. To prepare, I reread the book this week, finishing last night around 1 a.m. This book is my absolute favorite in the trilogy, and I’m glad I read it again. The movie was, in a word, excellent. I felt the people behind the film did a great job of sticking to the book and bringing the images to life. I don’t want to spoil anything by recapping my favorite scenes, so I won’t go into specifics here, but I, once again, loved the work they did with wardrobes, particularly with Katniss Everdeen and Effie Trinket. I was incredibly impressed by the designs, especially with Katniss’ mockingjay dress for her interview and Effie’s butterfly dress during the Quarter Quell reaping. Jennifer Lawrence also did well in portraying the emotional struggles Katniss goes through in this story.

jackman cancerSomething that’s been on my mind a lot lately is the story about Hugh Jackman’s recent skin cancer scare. Personally, getting skin cancer is one of my greatest fears in life. Those who know me know how much I stress wearing sunscreen, and do so as regularly as I can. I couldn’t imagine discovering a new spot somewhere on my skin and learning it was cancer. I, like almost anyone, would be absolutely devastated. My risks of getting skin cancer are already high because of the treatments I’ve had for my vitiligo in the past, so it’s something I think about often lying awake in bed at night. Like Mr. Jackman stressed, “USE sunscreen!!!”

On a lighter note, Lady Gaga hosted SNL last week, and I thought it was absolutely brilliant. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it, definitely one of the best SNLs I’ve ever seen. My favorite skit was probably her last one in which she reflects on her past career as a future/old version of herself. I feel Lady Gaga could continue to succeed in a minor acting career. On a side note, her new album, Artpop, is not my favorite work of hers, though I do love it as a dance CD, which seems to be the intention she had in the way she wrote the music. Currently,my favorite song from the new album is “Dope.”gaga snl

That’s about all I have to say on some of these recent pop culture events. Thanks again for reading, and I hope you will share some of your pop culture thoughts with me in the comments section below!
